Against heavily defensive formations, passing into space can sometimes be the only way to score. Aim to pass the ball into space between defenders in areas where your team can chase after. Keep the passes aimed almost straight at the scoring zone, this means that when a pass is intercepted, your opponent still has to get past you.
When used skilfully it is possible to pass the ball into the scoring zone in such a way that an opponent will collect the ball before being tackled. This takes a great deal of skill and judgement but is possible.
